The City of Brick Borough
The Geography:
The city of Brick Borough, located in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, has a size of approximately 5.8 square miles, approximately 5.6 of those being being land and 0.2 of them being water. The city has a population of 58,254 (2010), 68% being Caucasian, 24% being African American, 6% being Hispanic, and 2% being Asian, Native American, and otherwise. The city’s nickname is “The White Rose City”.
The Roads:
Brick Borough has two main road that run through the city proper. These arteries bring people and business to the city every day. Those two roads are the following: Interstate 83, of which the main entity runs North and South just East of town, has a branch called “I-83 Business Loop” which comes off of the main highway and runs parallel to the main highway through the center of the city. In the city, the official street name is George Street. Additionally there is Main Street, AKA Route 462, which runs East to West through the center of the city, and originates on the other side of the Susquehanna River, where it comes North from St. Sprenklesburg and Route 74. Route 30 can be found just North of the Borough, and the interchange between Route 30 and Interstate 83 is called the Eisenhower Interchange, or “The Ike” for short.
The Sections:
Brick Borough is divided into 14 districts/neighborhoods. Starting in the North side of the city and going counterclockwise there are:
- Sacum, a peaceful neighborhood with a reputation for community-centered events.
- Alumville, a tiny neighborhood with a big reputation for being the safest neighborhood to live in
- Campton, a small community rich with spirit and culture
- Lakeview, a serene and isolated neighborhood that surrounds Brick Lake
- Westview, another area filled with commercial businesses as well as newer houses
- Old Town, which contains original city architecture that dates back to the 19th century
- Downtown, filled with apartments, stores, and culture
- Industrial District, filled with factories that produce appliances, cars, and clothing; the Industrial District also includes Brick Borough’s commercial rail lines and the Brick Borough Stone Quarry.
- Chelsea, home of the working men and women of the Industrial area
- Devil’s Den, the most infamous part of the city and home to crime, gangs, and violence
- BrickLeigh Heights, one of the largest and most diverse parts of the city
- Reister’s Summit, filled with commercial businesses and business owner’s homes
- Business District, the heart of Brick Borough’s economic status, filled with corporate high-rises, the highest reaching 14 stories into the sky.
- Ore Terrace, a community formed around college students and their apartment-style homes.
Education:
The Brick Borough School District has three elementary schools, one middle school, and a high school inside of the city limits. The Elementary Schools are Lakeview (Lakeview), Western (Downtown), and Angels (Devil’s Den). Both the middle and high schools are located on the main campus in between Old Town and Downtown. Alternative schooling includes Brick Borough Technical School, located in BrickLeigh Heights, and Brick Borough Catholic School, located in Reister’s Summit. For education beyond the high school level, there is Brick Borough University. BBU, the Warriors, has a seven hall campus that spans the area of a square mile just outside of town to the Northeast. Dormitories are available on campus, and most of the ones separate from the college are located in the Ore Terrace neighborhood.
Transportation:
Brick Borough is a main transportation hub for the area. Underground, there are three main subway lines that run Northeast, West, and Southeast. They branch off at different hubs along the way. These subway lines link Brick Borough to neighboring cities, such as St. Sprenklesburg and Studington. Brick Borough also has two main above-ground high-speed rail lines. Like the subways, they branch off and connect to different cities in the area. Five cargo train lines run through the city and transport materials and goods in and out of the Industrial zone of the city. Lastly, there is the Legoardia International Airport (LGX). The airport is one of the busiest in the area, transporting over 400,000 passengers annually, as well as shipping close to 1 million tons of cargo annually. Legoardia Airport also has its own fire station, with 10 specialized firefighting personnel.
Entertainment:
Most of Brick Borough’s entertainment centers around the legendary Citizen's Arena, home to the Brick Borough Buccaneers baseball team. Brick Borough also has at least one movie theater in each neighborhood, and there is a community entertainment theater in almost all neighborhoods.
Nature:
Brick Borough has several places where citizens can escape the city life. Brick Lake is the largest body of water in the area, covering the area of about one square mile, and home to fishing, boating, and the surrounding forests are attractive for sight-seers and hikers alike. Brick Borough Wildlife Park is home to a lot of native PA wildlife, including Whitetail deer, the red fox, and the black bear. This land is protected by the federal government and hunting on this land is illegal.
Business/Commerce:
In addition to the corporate high rises in the Business District and the factories and warehouses of the Industrial District, there are a couple other big ways Brick Borough brings in money. Brick Borough Stone Quarry is located in the Industrial District. The Quarry harvests, stores, and sells different types of rocks and minerals from the area. They contribute these resources to road-building and repair projects, among other infrastructural maintenance. Brick Borough Mall, located right off of Interstate 83 in Reister’s Summit, is home to a massive mall complex, as well as five island strip mall complexes. Anchor stores include Macy’s, Bon Ton, Boscov’s, Sears, Target, Walmart, and JC Penney. Other popular stores include Hallmark LL Bean, Bath and Body Works, Rue 21, Victoria’s Secret, Hallmark, and the Lego Store.
Public Health/Safety:
Brick Borough has two main hospitals in the city: Brick Borough Memorial Hospital and Brick Borough General Hospital. Brick Borough Memorial Hospital is located in the Sacum neighborhood. Brick Borough General Hospital is located between BrickLeigh Heights and Devil’s Den. Brick Borough Memorial Hospital also contains both trauma and burn centers.
The Brick Borough Police Department has its headquarters located off of George Street in Downtown. The Brick Borough Police Department consists of over 200 men and women. The Police Department has several special divisions including SWAT, Bomb Squad, K9, and Crime Scene Investigation.
The Brick Borough Fire Department has its headquarters located in Reister's Summit. The Fire Department consists of 54 career firefighters, 22 officers, and 28 apparatus, and operates four fire stations throughout the city. The Fire Department has members trained in areas such as hazardous materials, technical rescue, and water rescue.
Brick Borough EMS is the city’s premier EMS provider. Its units are operated jointly with the Fire Department, and some of them are stationed at the city’s fire stations. All of Brick Borough EMS’ units are ALS-equipped.
Brick Borough Fire Department
The Brick Borough Fire Department is comprised of around 54 career firefighters, 22 officers, and 28 apparatus who protect the city 24/7/365. Currently, the Brick Borough Fire Department has four stations strategically located throughout the city. Right now the department runs the following apparatus:
- 4 front-line engines (including one with a 55' Telesqurt)
- 2 reserve engines
- 1 tower ladder
- 1 air/light unit
- 2 mini-pumpers
- Other miscellaneous utility and support vehicles
- Multiple command units
Brick Borough, recognized as Company 3, runs on average upwards of 8000 calls a year and runs an average of 22 calls a day. Brick Borough is proud to be certified as ISO-Class 1 since 2017. The Brick Borough Fire Department serves side-by-side with local EMS providers on medical calls since late 2016. In 2018, Brick Borough EMS began housing their ALS medical units in some of the Borough's fire stations. Even though it is not the busiest fire department out there, Brick Borough has its fair share of the action, and whenever the tones go off, the brave men and women of the Brick Borough Fire Department are always ready to help those in need.
