History
It all started in 1962. Brick Borough was expanding rapidly and officials, both government and otherwise, we trying to keep up with all the additions that had to be added to accommodate the growing population. One of these things was the division of the neighborhoods. There were areas generally designated as the "suburbs" and then there were the "heights". The largest of which was BrickLeigh Heights, which came about in the fall of 1962. It consisted of an area about five square miles in size. There were ten churches, two schools, at least fifty businesses, and hundreds of multi-story type townhouses. After several structure fires resulted in fatalities due to the distance between the Brick Borough fire stations and the Heights, a grant for a fire station was given to the Heights from the Borough.
The construction of the station was completed in the spring of 1964. It was three stories tall, had three bays, and could house a maximum of five apparatus of varying sizes. The first units were two American LaFrance pumpers which had 1000 gpm pumps, 500 gallon tanks, over 1000' of hose, and over 30' of ground ladders. The department also bought a Cadillac command vehicle and a large Dodge pickup truck to which they added compartments, and deemed their "rescue". Numbered "8", the department was home to Engines 81 and 82, Rescue 83, and Command 84. During the "war years", where fire departments faced increased call volumes and cities faced crime and chaos, the department averaged a dozen fire calls a day, from box alarms to working fires. In 1982, the department bought two American LaFrance Century pumpers, to act as Engines 81 and 82, with 1500 gpm pumps, 500 gallon water tanks, and which could carry over 1000' of hose and 30' of ground ladders. The department also bought a Ford Utility van which they decked out and used as the new Rescue 83. The command vehicle was also replaced by a newer Crown Victoria.
Throughout the 80's and early 90's the condition of the Heights went downhill, and crime rates spikes. Once again, calls spiked into the range of ten per day. Car crashes became more common with the expansion of Route 50 to the south of the Heights. In 1994, Command 84 was replaced with a newer Crown Victoria. In 1999, the department began to incorporate EMS training into their units. By the summer of the same year, all firefighters in the department were EMS certified. Soon, the call volume grew to around twenty per day as the department began to receive medical calls, in addition to their heaping load of fires and car crashes.
Fast forward to 2007; Engine 82 was hit by a by a tractor-trailer, and was totaled. Three firefighters were hurt. The department placed an order for a new engine from Seagrave. Delivered in the summer of 2008, Engine 81 is a 2008 Seagrave Commander II with a 1250 gpm pump, a 500 gallon water tank, and capacity to carry over 1000' of hose and 30' of ground ladders. Engine 81 was renumbered as Engine 82 when the new rig was placed in service. In 2010, a Chevy Tahoe was placed in service to replace Command 84. 2012 marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of BrickLeigh Heights and a large celebration parade was held. In 2013, the department acquired a Ford F550/RPI light rescue to serve as Rescue 83.
2014 marked the 50th year that the fire station had been built, and a celebration including multiple local fire departments. In 2015, Pierce refurbished Engine 82. 2016 has seen the continual come and go of residents in the area, and the heroin epidemic is a ever-current and growing problem. So far, the expansion of the area has slowed, but the call volume has not. And BrickLeigh Heights' bravest are still fighting the good fight, and will never, ever stop.
